Safe-Way Installed At St Helens Subway

Customer: St Helens MBC

Product: Safe-Way

Location: A580 (East Lancashire Road) subway

A busy, high speed dual carriageway, the A580 joins Manchester with Liverpool and cuts right through St Helens. With housing estates on either side, members of the public regularly require access across the carriageway.

At Simmonsigns, we strive to make our roads safer for everyone, designing and manufacturing products specifically to achieve this purpose. As such a busy area, it was essential that there was safe access for people to cross the carriageway that provided good visibility, during the day and night.

Previously, the subway was lit with fluorescent tubes. But both St Helens MBC and local councillors received complaints from residents following six incidents of vandalism and outages.

Discussions were conducted with both St Helens’ council and the contractor, Jones Lighting, and after a site survey from Simmonsigns, it was determined that a robust light source with low energy LED lighting was required.

We proposed our Safe-Way unit; a high efficiency, low energy LED lighting solution with 50% energy saving compared to the old PL units, which has also been tested against vandalism in accordance with BS EN 62262:2002 reaching an IK10 level.

Simmonsigns’ Northern Area Manager, Steve Hobson, said he was “delighted to have been able to provide such a great solution. Our Safe-Way units have improved the whole appearance of the subway that now has a bright, open feeling. I am sure it will give the local residents using the subway a feeling of enhanced confidence and safety”.
